Mary Ellen Woodside

Violin

 

For many years, the second violinist of the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, currently the first violinist of the Merel Quartet and a member of András Schiff's Capella Andrea Barca, Mary Ellen Woodside is a passionate chamber music enthusiast. She has performed at festivals such as the Salzburg Festspiele, the Menuhin Festival Gstaad, the Lucerne Festival, the Ittingen Whitsun Concerts, the Young Artists in Concert in Davos, the Kunstfest Weimar, the Omaggio a Palladio in Vicenza, and the International Musicians Seminar Musica da camera aperta, Prussia Cove, with artists such as Joshua Bell, Tabea Zimmermann, Heinz Holliger, Thomas Demenga, Julian Bliss, Nobuko Imai, Hariolf Schlichtig, Christoph Richter, and Dénes Várjon. Mary Ellen studied at the Eastman School of Music with Charles Castleman, graduating with honors and receiving the coveted Performer's Certificate. She won numerous awards before coming to Europe to continue her studies at the Guildhall School in London with Yfrah Neaman. She was selected as a soloist for Yehudi Menuhins's "Live Music Now," won second prize at the Bryan Young Artists Competition, and was a finalist at the Washington International Competition and the Kulenkampff Competition in Cologne, Germany. The focal point of her studies were chamber music courses with mentors including Sándor Végh, András Schiff, György Kurtág, Robert Levin, Alfred Brendel, and Ferenc Rados.
