The Perugia Chamber Orchestra

The Perugia Chamber Orchestra was born from the long-standing experience of young Umbrian musicians in promoting musical culture, particularly in musical productions for young people in schools. The collaboration between instrumentalists, initiated within the "Music for Growing" project of the Perugia Classical Music Foundation, led to the creation of a string and wind ensemble capable of extending its commitment to musical diffusion through concerts and offering a new formation to Umbrian and Italian music production organizations. This new ensemble draws on the expertise consolidated through collaborations with some of the finest national orchestras (the Accademia di Santa Cecilia, the Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala, the Orchestra della Toscana, the Camerata Strumentale "Città di Prato," etc.) and through high-profile solo work. The musicians who make up the Perugia Chamber Orchestra also include some of the finest talents of the latest generations, winners of national and international competitions and prestigious scholarships, such as those awarded by the Leandro Roscini Prize, which supports young Umbrian musicians.

 

The Orchestra has enjoyed great success with "Altissima Luce/Laudario di Cortona," in collaboration with Paolo Fresu, arranger and bandoneonist Daniele di Bonaventura, and the Armoniosoincanto vocal group. A reinterpretation of the Laudario of Cortona, the project was proposed in 2016 both at Umbria Jazz and for the Sagra Musicale Umbra, and subsequently in Terni (Umbria Jazz Spring), in Turin (Narrazioni Jazz), in Rome (Notte Sacra, Church of Sant’Ignazio di Loyola), in Milan (Jazzmi, Hangar Bicocca), in Cortona (Festival of Sacred Music), in L’Aquila (Società Aquilana dei Concerti «B. Barattelli»), in Alghero (Jazz Alguer). The meeting between Paolo Fresu and Giovanni Sollima gave rise to the TWO ISLANDS project, also produced by Umbria Jazz and the Fondazione Perugia Musica Classica non-profit organization. It debuted in 2018 in Perugia and in the following months was performed in Terni, Tharros (OR), L’Aquila, Verona Jazz, and Fano Jazz by the Sea.

Recently released were recordings of Mozart's Flute Concertos (Camerata Tokyo) with Karl-Heinz Schütz, principal flute soloist of the Vienna Philharmonic, and "Altissima Luce/Laudario di Cortona" on the Tuk Music label.
